Character design development

 Character designs:

Character Inspiration:

Final Fantasys Cloud as a character has undergone severe transformations over the years. starting off as a very simple low poly model just detailed enough to add some personality to him in the form of facial features. His original overall design was the basis of further development over time leading up to the heavily detailed character we have today. - Using Clouds overall advancements over time id like to do the opposite of this to challenge myself in character creation. starting off with a higher detailed drawing and then working my way down to a lower detailed sprite.

Link:
Link is another one of my inspirations for the overall design of the character i will be creating.
Link much like cloud has undergone huge transformations over the years. stating off as a very small simple 16X16 sprite to then evolve into the current link full of high detail and colour.
Link in his 8 bit form is very simple in design yet keeps the charcter looking good and suitable. with there just being enough detail to look good in game. However in his first game he did tend to blend a bit into the background of the game which personally made me not get invested into this character until much later on in the series where he was then of a much higher detail.

First Character Draft.
Using a the pen tool in Photoshop i initially started with a simple circular head in order to start designing. The Hair style in which i chose is reminiscent of longer haired protagonists as this would allow me to obscure some high detailed parts yet keep the character having a personality.
The below drawing is my first draft of a higher detailed character design featuring heavy shadows under the hair in order to give it the impression of being over her face.
her eyes are blue in which make her stand out more so than heaving black eyes and also gives her more human characteristics even though shes a cartoon.

Second character draft.
This second character design includes the body in which is purposely left out of the higher detailed one due to the final character ultimately not having a detailed body and due to me wanting to focus upon personality. the overall head shape stays the exact same as well as the hair style - it just has been altered to suit the pixelation.
This lower detailed design incorporates the same details as the higher one however gets rid of the shadow details in order to conserve pixel space. The size of this character is significantly larger than it would be in the game.

Final Character design.
This Character is within a 32X32 pixel board.
This design contains huge differences than the previous design. most notable in the hair, it is now purple instead of green. this move was done so that shed stand out a bit more in grassy backgrounds and as its a key focal point in her overall design i needed to make it stand out. The hair is also changed a bit in terms of its overall shape and size, its more spiky and less cluttered. I did this to ensure that the facial expressions of her were easily seen and that there was less obstruction in her face. her body is green and this although would blend somewhat into the background is contradicted by the blue jeans and skin coloured hands she has. She is designed in this final concept to stand out and have a clear view of her facial expressions even though she is of a very small size.
